Appleton Public Library
Studio J9 collaborated with the City of Appleton and SOM to thoughtfully revitalize the 1981 brutalist structure into a bright, welcoming community hub. Through strategic renovation and careful expansion, this longstanding library was successfully reconfigured as a flexible, light-filled center for learning, gathering, and civic exchange, better serving diverse users and community programs.

A strong graphics and branding program was inspired by Wisconsin's nature and wildlife. Thoughtfully chosen color gradients cover walls throughout the library, acting as a clear wayfinding system for the different levels.
Custom-drawn watercolors of mammals, pollinators, and lake life enliven the children’s area, paired with concise, age-appropriate facts that invite curiosity and learning. Each illustration highlights local species resulting in a vibrant, educational display that encourages observation, stewardship, and an early appreciation for biodiversity.
Graphic oval shapes are seen throughout the building, taking a cue from and connecting harmoniously with the building’s exterior and interior, reinforcing a cohesive visual language.
A coordinated sign palette was developed in tandem with donor levels, establishing a clear and thoughtful hierarchy of signage that enhances wayfinding and recognition.
